A 50-year-old Lake Elsinore man died Thursday after he reportedly hung himself in his jail cell while in the custody of the Newport Beach Police Department, according to a police department statement.

The department’s custodial officer found the man in his cell at about 2 p.m. during a routine check and activated the emergency management system, the statement said. Newport Beach Fire paramedics attempted to resuscitate the man, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, the statement said.
