UCI’s Gorgen up for Roger Clemens Award
UC Irvine junior Scott Gorgen has been named one of the 10 semifinalists vying for the fifth Roger Clemens Award presented to the best college pitcher in the country.
The Roger Clemens Award is administered by the Greater Houston Baseball Assn., which has donated more than $300,000 to the charities from the net proceeds from the first four dinners. The GHBA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the growth of amateur baseball in the Houston area.
Gorgen leads UC Irvine with a 10-2 record and has a 1.76 earned-run average. Gorgen, who became UC Irvine’s all-time strikeout leader in just three seasons, has 103 strikeouts on the year. Gorgen is holding opposing teams to a .158 average. Gorgen has won five of his last six starts and has pitched 97 innings while yielding 19 earned runs on 52 hits.
Joining Gorgen are Long Beach State’s Aaron Liebel, San Diego’s Brian Matusz, San Diego State’s Stephen Strasburg, Mississippi’s Scott Bittle, Missouri’s Aaron Crow, Georgia’s Joshua Fields, Miami’s Chris Hernandez, Tulane’s Shooter Hunt and Arizona State’s Mike Leake.
