The importance of Memorial Day

When most Americans think of Memorial Day, they tend to think of the unofficial start of summer, backyard barbecues and a day off from work. But for many families in Orange County and across the nation, Memorial Day will have a deeply personal meaning this year and in the years to come. This is why when I think of Memorial Day, one thing comes to mind—sacrifice.

It is this sacrifice which makes me so appreciative of what our country has been able to achieve. I am thankful for the men and women who spend every day of their lives defending our freedom and democracy both here in the United States and abroad. They are truly heroes.

Ever since the cowardly attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon in 2001, America has been at war. The war waged to combat terrorism has been debated by the leaders of our country for almost eight years. While my position of the war has been supportive, I respect the views of those who disagree. Regardless of your opinion of the war, I think we can all agree that honoring those who have given the ultimate sacrifice in this war and in wars past is the least we can do to show our appreciation for the freedoms won with the blood of our military men and women.

As a proud father of two children, and father-in-law of another, who have both served and continue to serve in our nation’s military, I pray every day for their continued safety. However, I am confident that their service will provide future generations with the opportunity to better the world in which we live.

Each Memorial Day I count my blessings for being born in the greatest nation on earth. I reflect on the selflessness our troops and their families have bestowed upon this country, so we can live in freedom.

Disagree with the policies that got us into war if you must, but we should never forget about the sacrifice our brave troops have so gallantly delivered on and off the battlefield. When you are enjoying your day off from work, please take a moment to reflect on those who are keeping you safe and defending our wonderful nation. I know I will.
