Oilers earn Quiksilver scholarships

Quiksilver awarded a $2,500 scholarship to both Sara Taylor and AJ Collins of the Huntington Beach High surf team.

The presentation came during the team’s annual banquet May 12 at the Elks Club of Huntington Beach.

Huntington won the 2008 state title of the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. High School Conference. Quiksilver is a team sponsor.

The Oilers, led by head coach Andy Verdone, will compete in June for the NSSA high school national title at Lower Trestles in San Clemente.

Former world champion surfer Peter Townend and Quiksilver’s Greg Macias, Todd Kline and Chad Wells, were among those in attendance at the team banquet.

? Next West Football Camp is June 1

West Football Camp will hold its next camp June 1 at the Edison High football fields.

The preseason speed and fundamentals camp will instruct local youth ages 6 to 14 in running mechanics, speed development, skill, agility and ply metrics.

Both one-on-one and seven-on-seven tournaments will be held during the camp.

Pop Warner Football and Jr. All-American Football players are welcome.

The camp will run from 4 to 5:30 p.m. and the cost is $20 per camp.

Future camp dates are June 8, June 15, June 22 and June 29.

The cost for all sessions per camper is $140.
