Four Laguna Beach Lifeguards have been honored with the highest award for lifesaving in Orange County during 2007.

The four received the Technical Water Rescue Award for 2007 from Orange County Emergency Medical Services during a recent ceremony at UCI Medical Center, according to City Manager Ken Frank.

The four earned the honor for successfully completing a mass rescue at Treasure Island Beach on July 3, 2007, when 22 people were swept out to sea in a strong rip-current during very large surf conditions.

Marine Safety Officer Josh Bynum entered the water with three seasonal lifeguards, Eric Anderson, Rod Mortazavi and Trevor Frimond. The four worked for 20 minutes to get all 22 victims returned safely to shore.

Each year Orange County Emergency Service recognizes public safety personnel throughout the County for exceptional rescues. This year there were 97 nominations for recognition in several categories and the Laguna Beach Lifeguard rescuers received the highest award presented for a lifesaving event.
