Maxine Mary Sutherlen

December 5, 1915 - May 18, 2008

Maxine Sutherlen, of Balboa Island, CA, died May 18 in Newport Beach following a short illness. She was born to Sidney and Daisy Shepard in Park Falls, WI as the youngest of four children. She attended school in Wisconsin and graduated from Yuma High School in Arizona. Maxine married George Roth Sutherlen in 1942. His engineering career took them first to Cambridge, MA and then to China Lake, CA in 1945 where they raised their four children. They retired to Balboa Island in 1968.

Maxine was devoted to her family. She was an avid reader, crossword puzzle solver, needle worker, and miniature doxie lover. Maxine worked as an admitting clerk at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian for 17 years and as a devoted volunteer member of the hospital Auxiliary for 25 years.

She is survived by her two daughters, Betty Leone and husband, Robert of Yucca Valley, and Barbara Mason and husband, Dennis of Ridgecrest and her daughter-in-law, Sunne Sutherlen of Las Vegas, NV. Her five grandchildren include Dr. Kristen Mason of Bishop, Dwight Mason and wife, Katie of Beavercreek, OR, Pamela Horan and husband, Graydon of Bishop, David Sutherlen and fianc?, Stephanie of Santa Barbara, and Sarah Anderson and husband, Jake of Ridgecrest. Her great-grandchildren are William and Marie Mason of Beavercreek. She was proceeded in death by her husband, George, and her two sons, William and Robert, as well as two brothers and a sister.

A memorial service for Maxine will be held on Monday, June 9, 2008 at 12 noon at the Pacific View Mortuary Chapel in Corona del Mar, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hoag Hospital Foundation , PO Box 6100, Newport Beach, CA 92658-6100. You may specify the Hoag Cancer Center or the Hoag Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, her favorite charities.
