Harbor View Kindergartener Wins Golf Tournament
Andreas Weaver/Community Correspondent
Playing in his very first Golf Tournament, Zane Weaver, a kindergarten student at Harbor View Elementary, outplayed a talented field of 6 year olds to win the US Kids World Golf Championship Qualifier Santee, CA.
The 6 and under division consisted of a 9 hole par 36 course at the challenging Carlton Oaks Country Club; a course riddled with steep bunkers, and difficult shots over water hazards. The filed consisted of veteran 6 year old players from Houston, Texas; Peoria, Arizona; Las Vegas, Nevada as well as Southern California players from Pasadena, Long Beach, Corona Del Mar, Rossmoor and San Diego.
The field traveled from far and wide to competing for a coveted spot in the US Kids Golf World Championship at Pinehurst in North Carolina July 31 – Aug 3.
Only the event champion would earn an invitation. Zane played a virtually flawless round and took an early lead with two birdies in the first three holes. He then held off the field with a near flawless short game and a lone bogey at the par 3 seventh. Zane had just 15 putts with no 3 putts in route to a one under par 35 and a two stroke victory. Zane Weaver is a regular at Newport Beach Golf Course where he learned to play just 12 months ago.
