May-Treanor looks to defend at Hermosa Beach

Newport Harbor High product Misty May-Treanor and partner Kerri Walsh will look to win their sixth straight Assn. of Volleyball Professionals tournament this weekend at the Hermosa Beach Open.

May-Treanor and Walsh, the defending Hermosa Beach champions, won the Atlanta tournament Sunday by defeating the No. 2 seeded Jenny Johnson Jordan and Annett Davis in the final, 21-7 and 21-17.

The top women’s duo remains undefeated in an AVP Tour main draw action with a perfect record of 25-0 this season. Their last loss was Aug. 19, 2007, when they lost at the Boston Open final to Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs.

Last year at Hermosa Beach, May-Treanor won her women’s tour record 73rd tournament. May-Treanor now has 94 wins.

Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb also comes into Hermosa Beach hot.

He and partner Sean Rosenthal won the Atlanta title last weekend, defeating Anthony Medel and Fred Souza in the final, 18-21, 21-15, 15-10.

Gibb and Rosenthal also won at Huntington Beach earlier this year.

Main draw competition begins today at 9 a.m. at Hermosa Beach.
