Writing workshop at Latitude 33

Latitude 33 Bookshop, 311 Ocean Ave., will host a free writing workshop from 6 to 8 p.m. June 18.

The workshop, “Gearing Up to Write,” focuses on the physical and mental conditions under which people write and what they can change to produce their best work.

Rohrer presents New York artists

Rohrer Fine Art will debut “New York School” with an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday.

The exhibition showcases artwork from recent New York City masters of fine arts graduates Samuel T. Adams, Peter Gerakaris, Krisjanis Kaktins-Gorsline, Jessica Mein and Alyssa Phoebus.

These artists experiment with bold media combinations while investigating poignant emotional and universal terrain.

The show runs through Sept. 6.

Museum holds ‘Juxtapoz’ show

Laguna Art Museum will open its new show “In the Land of Retinal delights: The Juxtapoz Factor” on June 22.

This exhibition will present the work of more than 150 artists and posits that the art movement of low-brow, surrealistic, pop, figurative and narrative work featured in the pages of San Francisco’s Juxtapoz magazine has been an unacknowledged art movement for the last 40 years.

Film Society screenings in June

The Laguna Beach Film Society will host two film screenings in the month of June.

The first, “Body of War,” a documentary produced and directed by Phil Donahue and Ellen Spiro also features two original songs by Edie Vedder, chronicles the journey of a 25-year-old soldier, Tomas, as he returns from Iraq, paralyzed from a bullet to the spine.

“Body of War” will screen at the South Coast Cinema at 7 p.m. June 19 and the cost is free to Laguna Beach Film Society members, and $20 for guests and public.

The second, “Whale Rider” tells of an 11-year-old girl living in the patriarchal New Zealand tribe Whangara.

Pai believes she will be the next chief. Her grandfather, Koro, is bound by tradition to pick a male leader.

Pai loves Koro more than anything, but she must fight him and a thousand years of tradition to fulfill her destiny.

This film screens for free outdoors at Lang Park at 7:30 p.m. June 28.

Last Sunset Serenade this weekend

The final city-sponsored Sunset Serenade will feature blues guitarist Bob Hawkins.

The concert will begin at sunset tonight at Main Beach Park.

MOCA director to speak at Art-A-Fair

Jeremy Strick, the director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, will speak on “Contemporary Art in the Museum” at the Art-A-Fair on June 26, prior to the opening to the general public.

The Los Angeles Regional Chapter of the Swiss-American Chamber of Commerce hosts the evening; this is the second year the chamber has presented an evening for its membership at the Art-A-Fair.

Strick has been director of MOCA since 1999.

There are limited seats available for non-members for the price of $82 each. Chamber members pay $69. Admission includes champagne, wine and hors d’oeuvres starting at 5:30 p.m.; a sit-down dinner at Tivoli Too!; and Strick’s presentation.

10,000th yoga laugher expected Tuesday
