BRIEFLY IN EDUCATION
Two achieve highest honor in Girl Scouts
Jami Andrews and Alison Crowley, both graduating seniors from Laguna Beach High School, have achieved the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting. On May 31 they were honored, along with four other south Orange County girls, at a ceremony and reception.
The Girl Scout Gold Award, which parallels the Boy Scout Eagle Award, requires work in the areas of acquisition of skills, leadership, career exploration, self-evaluation and assessment of community needs. The culmination of these efforts is a service project each girl creates, plans, organizes and completes, which must involve at least 65 hours of their time.
Jami planned her Girl Scout Gold Award project to help the softball league and the softball program at Laguna Beach High School. Jami held an all-day softball workshop for younger girls to encourage an interest in the sport. More than 25 girls came to the event for fun, learning and prizes.
Alison loves to cook, so for her Girl Scout Gold Award project she wrote, edited and produced a cookbook of easy, nutritious and inexpensive recipes to give to women in transition. The cookbook was distributed to Laura’s House, the United Methodist Church for their college bound members, and several other organizations.
On Monday evening, the two girls were also presented to the younger Girl Scouts of Laguna Beach and their parents during the traditional end of the year Bridging Ceremony at the Girl Scout House on High Drive.
