Josh Spicer nearly went the distance for the Costa Mesa National Little League Angels, helping lead them to a 5-1 victory over the Nationals in the Minor A championship game Thursday night.

Spicer worked 5 2/3 innings, allowing just one run.

“He pitched a phenomenal game,” said Coach Greg Spicer, Josh’s father.

Josh Spicer didn’t finish the game only because he had reached his pitch count, the coach said. Nick Torres relieved and struck out a batter to secure the win.

Josh Spicer also delivered a double and scored a run. The Angels also received stellar defensive play from second basemen Devin Pacheo and Kyle Kutler.

Pacheco had a “pivotal” bunt in the game that advanced runners, Coach Spicer said. Kutler provided standout baserunning and scored a run. The Angels’ Zack Arceyut contributed a key single, beating out the throw to first. He later scored.

“The team has played great all year,” Greg Spicer said. “The boys deserve this because of their hard work and focus throughout the year.”
