NMSC successful in Irvine: The Newport Mesa Soccer Club had three teams make it to the finals May 24-25 at the Irvine Memorial Classic 2008 Soccer Tournament.

Held on the UC Irvine fields, Newport Mesa Soccer Club Blue team, a girls’ under-9 squad, took first place, U-10 NMSC Red and U-11 NMSC Blue both earned second-place finishes.

With a 2-1 victory over Beach FC, a 3-0 victory over Westside Breakers White and a 1-1 tie with FC Long Beach Lightning, the girls U-9 NMSC Blue were in the final. The under-9 girls’ team defeated a strong San Diego Surf Blue team 2-1 to win the final game.

The girls’ U-10 NMSC Red team squashed its first two opponents in back-to-back shutouts. The Carlsbad Wave and then the West Coast United Blue both lost 2-0. Before getting to the finals, they lost a back and forth match to the Chelsea SC Blue, 3-2.

In the final game, each team had their half. It was FC Long Beach in the first and NMSC Red in the second. Unfortunately, for the NMSC Red, it could not hold it together and in the end lost, 2-1, to FC Long Beach in the last 10 minutes.

The girls’ U-11 NMSC Blue team started strong, but failed to pull through. It went undefeated throughout its pool, winning one game and tying two. The girls’ under-11 team tied the Nomads, 0-0, and Ladera Ranch FC, 1-1. It was the astounding 6-0 victory over Carlsbad Wave White that put the NMSC team into the final. In their final game the NMSC Blue girls and Carlsbad FC Black were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation. The game came down to penalty kicks which Carlsbad won.

Ticon Construction beat Beach Pit BBQ, 5-4, for the Newport Harbor Baseball Assn. Pinto National Division championship May 18.

It was Scotty Ryder who got things started for the Ticon by hitting a double in the first inning to score Joe Fuller and Julian Rogers.

Julian Rogers had two singles in the game. He was hit by a pitch and scored three times.

In the third inning, Luc Stuka had a double with two RBIs coming in and added a triple in the fifth inning. Stuka also assisted with pitching two scoreless innings along with Nick Finfrock.

Justin Shollin also pitched a scoreless fifth inning and struck out two.

It was in the sixth inning that

Eric Purcell, Scott Siecinski, and Jake Rooney, helped contribute to the Ticon win.

The Ticon Construction had a 7-1 record in the Pinto National League tournament.

Former Major League pitcher, Jim Abbott, made a visit to speak to the kids before the game.

Yankees 11, Angels 0: The Yankees secured their first-place position with a dominant win on May 31. The Yankees pitching kept the Angels scoreless throughout the game. Daniel Morales started the game on the mound and had two strikeouts in first two innings. William Leiby pitched the third inning with two strikeouts. Kris Cardenas and Noah Ostunio successfully pitched the fourth inning.

Offensively, Michael Huff hit a single into center field resulting in two RBIs in the first inning. Morales had a double to center and Jake Martin hit a home run, both in the second. Cardenas hit a double and Huff hit another RBI single in the third inning. Defensively, Cardenas made a fine play at third base, Morales a nice play as pitcher to Mickey Beliakoff at first, and Trevor Cohen a great play at second base, all in the second inning.

In the third, Alexis Herrera got the runner out at second on an excellent throw from Huff as catcher. Cohen made a great play on a line-drive in the fourth inning.

The Yankees move on to District 62 Tournament of Champions play beginning June 14.
