Lightning place six on first team for Academy League
Six members of the Sage Hill School boys’ tennis team were named first-team All-Academy League recently, as well as three Lightning players earning second-team recognition.
Juniors Kevin Wang, Troy Astorino and Andrew Yun made first-team status, along with senior Grant Gerdau, sophomore Alex Koeberle and freshman Andrew Kurzweil.
Sage senior Karam Sethi, along with sophomore David Fayngor and freshman Kevin Marshack, earned second-team status.
Wang, who finished the year 34-19 in singles, was the Academy League individual champion, defeating teammate Astorino in the finals.
Yun and Kurzweil were named MVP of the league in doubles, only the second Sage Hill team to ever earn that distinction (Alle Hsu and Jaclyn Smrecek did it two years ago for the Lightning girls).
Sage Hill finished the season as Academy League champion for the first time in the program’s history, also beating rival St. Margaret’s for the first time. Coach A.G. Longoria’s squad, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division IV for much of the season, advanced to the playoff quarterfinals for the fifth straight season before falling at Rowland, 12-6.
