Sage gains plenty honors

Sage Hill School baseball players Jack Heffron, Sean Vogel and JJ Beruldsen earned first-team, All-Academy recognition after leading the Lightning to their first league title in school history.

First-year coach Andy Berglund was named Coach of the Year after guiding Sage Hill (15-7, 12-3 in league) to its first CIF Southern Section Division VI second-round playoff appearance. The Lightning lost at Apple Valley Christian, 2-1.

Heffron, a freshman, led the team with a .476 batting average, 11 doubles, and was tied for first with two home runs and two triples. He was second in RBIs with 24.

The 6-foot-2 left-handed pitcher went 4-3 with a 2.83 earned-run average. Heffron stuck out 51 in 37 innings.

Vogel, a sophomore shortstop, hit .414 as the leadoff hitter. He stole 12 of 13 bases, scored 27 runs, doubled five times, and drove in 18 runs.

In relief, the right-hander went 2-0 with two saves and recorded 22 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings. Vogel posted a 2.95 ERA.

Beruldsen, a senior, batted .319 with a team-best 26 RBIs. He tied for first in home runs with two and added three doubles.

The four players receiving second-team honors were senior pitcher/third baseman Travis Duncan, sophomore catcher Dusty Orrantia, junior first baseman Christopher Griffin and junior Nick Ongaro.

Duncan led all starters with a 1.97 ERA and in innings pitched with 39. He had 27 strikeouts and finished 3-4. He hit .286 and had 17 RBIs.

Orrantia threw out more than 50 percent of base runners and called pitches. He batted .333 with 10 RBIs, scored 20 runs, doubled twice and tripled once.

Griffin was second in hitting at .457. He drove in 17 runs and doubled four times. He posted a .991 fielding percentage, tops on the team.

Ongaro stole nine of 10 bases, and batted .323 with 14 RBIs.
