FATHER’S DAY

Let’s face it — Huntington’s dads have received more loud neckties, golf ball washers and Lake Havasu shot glasses than they care to admit.

Try giving the father in your life the most extravagant gift imaginable: quality time. Here are some ideas.

The annual Chili at the Beach cook off will be from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday on Main Street in Huntington Beach, between Pacific Coast Highway and Orange Avenue.

A $10-per-person tasting fee includes sampling contestants’ recipes and vote for winners.

For more information, call (714) 841-3034 or visit hbdowntown.com.

Surf’s Up

To please surfer dads, try taking them to two new art exhibits at the International Surfing Museum of Huntington Beach, 411 Olive Ave.

The museum is currently exhibiting “Surfing Sounds Part II: Jan & Dean,” featuring original art by Dean Torrence and memorabilia from the band’s decade-long rise to fame; and “Sharing Perspectives,” showing the works of surfer and artist Celine Chat of France from her time spent in Australia, the Caribbean and Brazil.

For more information, call (714) 960-3483.

Swimming Upstream

Fathers who happen to be avid swimmers have two opportunities to ply their sport this weekend.

The 58th annual Huntington Beach Pier Swim will be Saturday morning at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and Main Street; sign-ups and late entries will be taken from 8 to 8:30 a.m., followed by the event.

Trophies will be awarded to the top finishers in each division; entrants must be 12 or older. Swimmers should be able to swim a half-mile around the pier; wetsuits aren’t permitted.

A $17 preregistration cost includes a T-shirt; registration is $13 without a T-shirt.

For more information, call (714) 536-5281 or visit surfcity-hb.org.

Fathers can also attend a lecture on the history and current status of open water swimming at 7 p.m. at the REI store in the Bella Terra Mall, 7777 Edinger Ave., Huntington Beach.

The sport’s origin was with the first successful swim across the English Channel in 1875, and now attracts everyone from triathletes to non-swimmers.

Auto Pilot

Dad will be tickled to see the Donut Derelicts car show from 6 to 9 a.m. Saturday at the corner of Magnolia and Adams avenues in Huntington Beach. With free admission, this 15-year tradition draws classic and hot rod car collectors from around the region to view and brag.

For more information, visit donutderelicts.net.

Nature Boy

Take dad on a two-hour walking tour of the Bolsa Chica Mesa and Wetlands from 10 a.m. to noon Sunday.

The docent-led tour makes five stops along the walk bridge and loop trails of the wetlands. Walkers are asked to meet in the reserve parking lot on Pacific Coast Highway, across from Bolsa Chica State Beach. Warm clothing, comfortable shoes and binoculars are recommended.

The tours are free; for more information, call (714) 846-1001 or visit www.bolsachicalandtrust.org.

Brunch Bunch

The usual barbecue is given a Caribbean twist — and no carcinogenic, charcoaly results — at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort, 21100 Pacific Coast Hwy., Huntington Beach. The Sunday brunch will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and includes live calypso entertainment as an accompaniment to a full barbecue meal. The cost is $49.95 for adults and $19.95 for children ages 6 to 12, plus tax and gratuity; kids 5 and younger get in free.

For reservations, call (714) 845-8444.

Weenie Boast

The 12th Annual Wiener National Dachshund Races will begin at 2 p.m. Saturday at Old World Village, 7561 Center Ave., Huntington Beach.

The wiener dogs draw a huge crowd to watch them race across a gated track. There is a $1 admission and viewing fee.

For more information, call (714) 898-5111 or visit wienerdogstore.com.
