Sailors’ Caldwell named MVP of Sunset League
Newport Harbor High 6-foot-8 senior setter Kyle Caldwell has been named MVP of the Sunset League after leading the boys’ volleyball team to an unbeaten league championship.
Along with the UCLA-bound Caldwell, USC-bound senior opposite Tucker Peleuses and UC Santa Barbara-bound senior outside hitter Mark Liebermann and senior middle blocker Max Volz earned first-team laurels after Newport Harbor (31-4) advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division I final.
Caldwell finished with 751 assists, 224 kills, 81 digs, 63 blocks and 63 services aces.
Caldwell is a repeat first-team member as is Peleuses.
The 6-4 Peleuses led the Tars with 328 kills and had 68 digs and 49 blocks.
The 6-5 Liebermann finished with 243 kills and 53 aces.
The 6-4 Volz had 174 kills and 58 blocks.
Senior libero Andrew Kaban and junior outside hitter JB Green made the second team.
Senior outside hitter Jamie Galey received honorable mention.
