Six local players earn all-league recognition

Four Costa Mesa High baseball players and two from Estancia earned first-team All-Orange Coast League recognition.

For the Mustangs, sophomore pitcher Tyler Peterson, sophomore second baseman Brian Waldron, senior outfielder Gabe Sanchez and pitcher/outfielder Andrew Millian made the first team.

Estancia’s selections were senior shortstop/pitcher Ryan Redding and senior center fielder Sam Trancoso.

Redding hit .378 and had 14 runs batted in, four triples and two home runs for Estancia (7-20, 0-12 in league). He posted a .510 on-base percentage and stole 33 of 38 bases. Coach Matt Sorensen said Redding, making first team for the first time, will walk on at the University of Oregon next year.

Peterson led the team with a 7-4 record and a 3.58 earned-run average. He played a big role in Costa Mesa (15-13, 8-4 in league) coming within one win of claiming the program’s first league title in 31 years. The Mustangs also made the playoffs for the second straight year.

Peterson struck out 43 in 68 1/3 innings and recorded one shutout and five complete games.

This is the first time Peterson, along with the rest of the Mustangs’ picks, has made the first team.

Waldron led the Mustangs with a .391 batting average, 18 walks, nine doubles, and was tied for first with 34 hits and 27 runs. He hit two home runs, drove in 21 runs, and was seven for seven in stolen bases.

Sanchez, a second-team pick last season, was first on the team in runs batted in (26), stolen bases (11 for 11) and triples, (three), and second on the team in average (.367), hits (33) and home runs (two).

Millian was 4-4 with a 4.97 ERA and led the team with 52 strikeouts in 50 2/3 innings. He threw two complete games. Offensively, Millian hit .326 with 25 RBIs and three homers, the last category was tops on the team. He also scored 26 runs and was six for six in stolen bases.

Trancoso, another first-time all-league honoree, hit .348 with 26 RBIs, nine doubles and one triple.

Second-team selections from Costa Mesa included junior shortstop Mikey Molina (.286, 21 RBIs, 11 doubles) and junior first baseman Nick Pederson (.362, 18 RBIs, six doubles). This is the second straight year Molina made the second team.

For Estancia, senior third baseman/catcher Eddie Tomasek, freshman pitcher/utility player Matt Carlyle and freshman pitcher/outfielder Victor Trujillo were second-team picks.
