Ex-Sailors still alive

PARIS — Top-seeded and three-time defending champion Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh are among eight women’s teams remaining at the Swatch Federation Internationale de Volleyball world tour event that began Friday in France.

May-Treanor, a Newport Harbor High graduate, and Walsh will meet Newport Harbor alumnus April Ross and her partner, Jen Boss, in today’s morning quarterfinal.

Ross-Boss, the No. 7 seed, defeated Tasmin Barnett and Natalie Cook of Australia, 24-22, 21-16, on Friday.

May-Treanor and Walsh were 21-16, 21-10 winners over Doris and Stefanie Schwaiger of Austria on Friday.

Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb and partner Sean Rosenthal are among 16 men’s teams remaining in the Olympic qualifying event.

Meanwhile, on the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals beach tour, Costa Mesa resident Mike Lambert and partner Aaron Wachtfogel, the No. 4 seed, will play Newport Harbor product Ty Tramblie and Mike Morrison in the first round of the contender’s bracket today in Belmar, N.J.

Former UC Irvine standout Whitney Pavlik, playing with Stacy Rouwenhorst, will also compete in the contender’s bracket today. They split a pair of matches in the winner’s bracket Friday.
