Give blood regularly and save a life, or three

Newport Beach lifeguards are inviting people to come out and help save a life Wednesday when they host their annual blood drive at the base of the Newport Pier.

From 2 to 8 p.m. outside of lifeguard headquarters, nurses from the American Red Cross will be on hand for anyone who wishes to donate.

The blood drive annually produces more than 100 units of blood to assist in lifesaving measures for up to 300 people. American Red Cross officials are prepared to take up to 120 units of blood, officials said.

Blood cannot be stockpiled for very long, officials said. The average unit of blood can only last from between a few hours to 42 days, highlighting the fact people should become regular donors, lifeguard officials said.

One unit of blood can save up to three people. Many recipients include patients undergoing surgery, cancer patients, people with blood diseases or people with severe burns or other traumatic injuries. To sign-up, call the Newport Beach Fire Department at (949) 644-3178 or sign-up at www.givelife.org.
