More than 600 participants on more than 40 teams of volunteers walked at Ocean View High School to raise money for cancer research in the Huntington Beach Relay for Life.

The event, a 24-hour continuous relay walk that raised more than $90,000 so far for the American Cancer Society, brought cancer survivors and volunteers together to walk for the cause. Walkers for teams ranging from the HB United team, full of city employees and their friends and family, to a team of employees of the firm PricewaterhouseCooper, made sure the high school track was occupied at all times from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Sunday.

To keep things interesting, some hours of the relay were dubbed theme events, from “Funny Hat Laps” to the late-night hour when participants were asked to wear their favorite super hero costume — followed by a midnight screening of “The Incredibles.”

But as always in the Relay for Life, there were more solemn observances as well — a survivors’ lap for those who have lived through the disease, and a luminaria ceremony, in which donors sponsored candles lit in honor of someone affected by cancer or who had passed away.
