WEST WINDSOR, N.J. — A.J. Brooks and J.P. Hogan, both Newport Harbor High students and Newport Aquatic Center rowers, qualified for the U.S. junior national rowing team Wednesday.

Brooks and Hogan, competing in the men’s pair, finished the 2,000-meter race in 6 minutes, 54.543 seconds. The qualifying standard for the U.S. team is 7:10. They will compete for the U.S. team at the World Rowing Junior Championships in Austria, July 22-27.

After qualifying for the world championships, Brooks and Hogan left for a flight to England to join their NAC teammates. The duo is part of the NAC men’s eight that will compete in the Henley Royal Regatta on Thursday.

HAGESTAD FALLS TO 42ND

RANCHO MIRAGE — Newport Beach resident Stewart Hagestad shot seven-over-par 79 Wednesday to drop to 42nd place after 36 holes of the 54-hole ClubCorp Mission Hills Desert Junior golf tournament at Mission Hills Country Club.

Hagestad, who shot 74 in the first round Tuesday, has a two-day total of 153, 14 shots off the lead.

The tournament concludes today.
