A field day for Costa Mesa

Two long-awaited children’s play areas will be unveiled to the public in Costa Mesa this afternoon.

First, two new soccer fields adjacent to the Fairview Developmental Center on Harbor Boulevard will be publicly previewed for the first time. The fields are unique in that they will be jointly used by developmentally challenged residents of the center and AYSO children’s soccer practices. The ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. today. at the corner of Harbor and Fair Drive.

Soon after, Angels Playground — the most handicapped-accessible park in the county, according to its builders — will be christened at its grand opening celebration at 3 p.m. The playground, adjacent to TeWinkle Park and directly across from the Costa Mesa Tennis Center, was engineered to allow disabled kids to ride swings, play in a sandbox and use many other amenities typically only accessible to the able-bodied.
