Hands-free cell offenders could be fined $20 or more

The California Department of Motor Vehicles is issuing a reminder for the new cellphone laws that go into effect Tuesday.

Senate Bill 33 is aimed at teens and makes it illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to use a cellphone or other wireless device while driving a motor vehicle.

While adults will still be able to use their cellphones while driving, SB 1613 requires them to use a hands-free device.

Drivers cited by officers will have to pay a fine: First offenses will result in a $20 fine with subsequent offenses of $50. With the addition of penalty assessments, these fines can be more than triple the base fine amount, according to a DMV news release.
