Harbor View comes out on top in relays

CORONA DEL MAR — At a big-time youth swim meet, Harbor View came up with a big-time victory.

Harbor View surpassed rival Newport Hills to capture the South Coast Swim Conference relay finals title Saturday at Corona del Mar High in front of a crowd of about 1,000.

Harbor View scored 590 points to win the relays, while Newport Hills (576), Green Valley (452) Lake Forest (434), Greenbrook (254) and Pacific Sands (204) followed.

Harbor View recorded winning times in several divisions, including: age 7-8 boys, 9-10 boys, 11-12 boys and girls, 13-14 boys and girls, and 15-18 girls.

The Harbor View boys’ 9-10 swimmers turned in record-breaking performances, setting new SCSC marks.

Justin Hanson, Timmy Hanson, Robert Naruse and Joe Alvarado broke the 200-yard breaststroke relay record in 2 minutes, 35:19 seconds, as well as the 100 butterfly relay record in 1:02.08.

From that group, Timmy Hanson, Justin Hanson, Naruse and Luke Wyatt also won the 200 backstroke relay with a record time of 2:21.26. Finally, Timmy Hanson, Alvarado, Ford Secrist and Justin Hanson broke the freestyle relay record with a time of 2:01.68.

The Harbor View boys’ 13-14 team consisting of Matthew English, Matt Berry, Daniel Hohl and Ari Marks also won big. They took the 200 backstroke relay and set a new meet record in 1:54.81.

The Harbor View Dolphins rode the momentum of the record-breaking swimmers and accumulated more points in both the girls’ and boys’ divisions to take the win.

Newport Hills narrowly lost the relay finals to Harbor View with strong performances from a wave of younger swimmers. The Killer Whales 5-6 boys and girls and boys’ 11-12 all registered strong performances. Newport Hills girls’ 5-6 swimmers swept their age group registering five relay wins. Swimmers Gianna Danese, Annabel Facey, Anna Wilde, Sophie Wallace, Kelley Ramm and Ella Musselman combined to win all five of their relays and secure a total of 70 points for Newport Hills.
