Breakers dump Capitals in WTT opener on road

ROSEVILLE — The Newport Beach Breakers never trailed in winning their World Team Tennis season opener, 21-16, at defending champion Sacramento on Thursday at Westfield Galleria.

Kaes Van’t Hof and Michaela Pastikova got the match off to a good start, winning 5-1 in mixed doubles over Sacramento’s Elena Likhovtseva and Eric Butorac.

The Breakers’ Angelika Bachmann then lost to Olga Puchkova in women’s singles, 5-3, as the Capitals pulled within two. But Breakers veteran Ramon Delgado then topped Sacramento’s Sam Warburg in men’s singles, 5-3, to give his team a 13-9 edge.

Pastikova and Bachmann followed with a 5-2 women’s doubles win. Delgado and Van’t Hof lost in men’s doubles to Butoroc and Warburg, 5-2, to send the match into overtime.

Once there, however, Delgado and Van’t Hof won the first game to end the match.

Newport Beach has its home opener Saturday at 7 p.m. at Newport Beach Country Club, against Kansas City.
