Medical center: Don’t put your coals in the sand

With the summer in full swing, UCI Medical Center officials are urging fire pit users to exercise caution as the center has seen a rise in the past in fire pit-related burnings during this time of year, officials said.

The center averages about 24 injuries each year due to fire pits or barbecues at the beach or campsites, officials said.

Loose coals can be hidden on the beach, burning the feet of those who unknowingly walk over them, said UCI Regional Burn Center Director Dr. Marianne Cinat.

Cinat also said children 6 and younger injure themselves by crawling or falling into fire pits. To avoid injury, Cinat says people should avoid putting coals in the sand, because coals can smolder for a day after. Douse the coals with water instead, she said.

If burned, Cinat advises to not use ice and instead wash the burned area for about 10 minutes in cool water. If the area is small, a cool washcloth can be used as well.
