Rally against crime with individualized Night Out

Costa Mesa police will give folks a chance to tighten their community bonds next month when they join police departments across the country in recognizing National Night Out.

Registration is open for any community-oriented groups who want to join the Aug. 5 event.

From 6 to 9 p.m., Costa Mesa police officers will visit any groups that have registered to join them.

National Night Out was created to heighten community crime and drug awareness, generate support for local anti-crime programs and strengthen neighborhood spirit and police support.

Costa Mesa police are using a different approach this year. Instead of putting on a large community event, almost like a carnival, police officers will visit those putting on smaller, neighborhood-oriented events.
