SOUNDING OFF: DeVore caused El Moro park delays

Instead of praising the public benefit from California’s first new oceanfront campground in 20 years, Assemblyman Chuck DeVore complains it is “behind schedule “” as has been other projects at this state park.” Amazing “Quote of the Week” (July 4), considering “our” assemblyman’s all-out fight on behalf of the El Moro leaseholders and his unending effort to delay this parks department project.

DeVore’s efforts, like those of his predecessor, John Campbell, drained the parks department of time and money. Conversion plans waited as the courtroom and legislative jousting ground on. PR battles were fought over saving kids from barbecue smoke and child molesters, saving Laguna from giant RVs, and saving the snowy plover, via counsel Hugh Hewitt’s federal court action.

DeVore’s last-minute legislative efforts to extend leases prompted more delay as tenants faced eviction orders from state parks, owner since 1979.

It’s good that construction is finally to bring a rare oceanfront recreational opportunity to the people of the State of California and its many visitors.
