The Newport-Balboa Rotary Club Foundation has provided a $2,000 grant to Dr. Rick Weiss’ One World Sight Foundation.

Club President Bob Silver and Foundation President Victor Currie presented the check to Weiss at the club’s June 25 meeting.

“We wanted to show our support for Dr. Weiss’ own foundation, which is building clinics and ophthalmological training centers in developing nations,” Currie said while making the presentation. To learn more about the incredible growth of Weiss’ organization, visit www.owsp.org.

BOOK OF GOLDEN DEEDS

Newport Harbor Exchange Club honored former Costa Mesa City Council member and restaurateur Gary Monahan with the Book of Golden Deeds Award at a recent meeting.

The presentation was made by past President Garry Tewinkle, who noted that Monahan twice served as mayor and was instrumental in the building of “The Farm” sports complex of playing fields for children.

Monahan’s oldest child has autism, which led him to take an active part in the Special Olympics and Angels Playground for disabled kids at Fairview State Hospital.

“He is well-known as a children’s advocate but he says, ‘I’m not King Arthur, but I’ll quote him: Why do we fight? For those who can’t,’” Tewinkle said.

NEW CLUB OFFICERS

The Exchange Club of Corona del Mar is in a unique situation, for six members have stepped forward to serve two months each as club president for 2008-09.

Volunteering are veteran members Tom Keys, Jack Wilder, Ed Kohlmeier, Shirley Kohlmeier, Bob Jessen and Sharon Wright.

Mike Scheafer has been installed as president of the Fish Fry Club of the Costa Mesa-Newport Harbor Lions Club for the fifth time at a recent meeting.

Thought for the Day as provided by Greg Kelley of the Newport-Mesa-Irvine Interfaith Council, “We find comfort among those who agree with us — growth among those who don’t.”
