UCI’s Chin wins twice, advances at U.S. Amateur

AURORA, Colo. — John Chin, who will be a junior at UC Irvine in the fall, recorded two wins in match play Thursday and advanced to the quarterfinals at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Murphy Creek Golf Course.

Chin defeated Luke Morgan of Muldrow, Okla., 8 and 6 in the morning, then defeated Wesley Bryan from Chapin, S.C., 3 and 2 in the afternoon.

Chin collected two birdies and an eagle in the 12 holes played during the morning match.

He recorded five birdies over the 16 holes in the afternoon win over Bryan, including the first two holes and the last two.

Chin will face Jeff Dennis of Jacksonville, Fla., in a quarterfinal match today at 6:45 a.m., Pacific Standard Time.

The semifinals are scheduled for this afternoon.

Chin was named 2008 Big West Conference Player of the Year after winning medalist honors at the Big West tournament.

He led UCI as a sophomore with a 71.57 average and seven top-10 finishes.
