Locals race to Catalina

Saturday morning was unusually cool for July in Newport Beach — and about 60 people had more cool weather ahead of them in the next day, as the South Shore Yacht Club launched its 31st annual Crew of Two sailing race.

Each of the more than two dozen competing boats had a two-person crew and planned to sail to Catalina Island and back, with the first class taking off by the Balboa Pier at noon.

Even though the race was expected to last overnight and beyond, though, it wasn’t all about roughing it.

Contestant Clint Stayton, an electrical contractor from Corona, said he and his co-skipper had a galley menu planned of linguine with clam sauce and baked Brie.
