Lois Marcia Irwin

Beloved Wife, Mother, and Grandma

“Gog”, passed away peacefully at

her home in Newport Beach on July

11, 2008. We will miss her strength,

intelligence, unending generosity,

and her love of family and life.

Lois was born in Buffalo, New York,

on September 26, 1920. She moved

to Oakland, California when she was

three. She attended University High

in Berkley. After graduation she

enrolled at the College of the Pacific

in Stockton, California. She pledged Delta Epsilon Sorority and

has remained dear friends with many of her sorority sisters until

her passing.

It was at The College of the Pacific where she met Al Irwin who

became the love of her life. They married in 1942 in Waukegan,

Illinois near the Great Lakes Naval Training Station where Al was

stationed as an Ensign in the Navy.

After the war, they returned to Stockton where Al finished his

education. Over the next few years, they started a family having

daughters Claudia and Marcia. Eventually, they returned to Al’s

hometown of Newport Beach. Lois became Al’s biggest supporter

and fan during his years of coaching at Newport Harbor H.S.,

OCC, and UCI.

Lois enjoyed being a homemaker and volunteer. She was a Girl

Scout Leader, a Tri HI Y Advisor and a teacher’s assistant at Mardan

School. More recently, she volunteered for the UCI Athletic

Boosters and The Friends of the Library bookstore.

Lois developed a love of travel and worked part time as a travel

agent. She and Al enjoyed trips to Europe, Mexico, and the Bahamas.

They had many adventures thru-out the United States. For

the past 40 yrs. they celebrated their anniversary in the Hawaiian

Islands of Kauai and Maui. This year was their 66th. anniversary.

Lois is survived by her husband Al, daughter Marcia Maze and husband

Dave, granddaughter Carrie Hammond and husband Chris,

grandson Casey Maze and his wife Kathleen and by her cherished

great grandsons Burke, Derek, Walker and Colton.

A celebration of her life will be held at the Costa Mesa Neighborhood

Community Center, 1845 Park Ave. on Tuesday Aug. 5, 2008

from 11-2.
