Stowell, Pettis, Olson to play in all-star contest

UC Irvine pitchers Bryce Stowell and Eric Pettis, and outfielder Cory Olson were named to the Armour-Cape Cod Baseball All-Star Game, which will be played Saturday at Veterans Field in Chatham, Mass.

Stowell, a member of the Bourne Braves, will make the start on the mound for the West. The right-hander, who will be a UCI junior, leads the league with a 1.14 ERA and has walked five in 31 2/3 innings while striking out 40. Stowell has allowed four earned runs on 20 hits in six games for the team.

Pettis, also a member of Bourne, is one of the eight pitchers on the West’s 11-player reserve list. Pettis, an incoming junior for the Anteaters, is 2-0 with a 1.04 ERA and five saves. The right-hander has played in 13 games, striking out 16 in 17 1/3 innings while giving up two earned runs on nine hits.

Olson, playing for Chatham, is fourth in the Cape with a .372 average. Olson, a junior coming from Orange Coast College, will start in the outfield for the East and has 32 hits and 19 runs scored on the season. He has belted five doubles and a triple while driving in nine runs in 22 games for the A’s.

Brian Hernandez, playing for the St. Cloud River Bats, competed in the Northwoods League All-Star Game last week. Hernandez, who will join the UCI program this fall, played for the North and went two for two off the bench. Hernandez is hitting .281 in 41 games. He is second on the club with 43 hits and 20 RBIs. Hernandez is tied for first with nine doubles and has a pair of home runs.
