FRANK RICHARD HERMAN, M.D.

November 19, 1920 – July 18, 2008

Born in Coburg, Oregon, Frank Herman was raised in nearby Eugene, where he began his academic career at the University of Oregon as an undergraduate. He continued at the same institution’s medical school in Portland, where he met and married Phyllis Eastlick, a cadet nurse, just prior to receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1949. He interned at San Bernardino County Hospital, completed his medical residency in San Mateo, CA, and began his practice of General Medicine in Newport Beach in 1950.

Soon after, he was drafted into the U.S. Navy and served at the Naval Hospital in Corona. Later, he was transferred to the U.S. Army Hospital at Camp Irwin (now Fort Irwin), CA. In 1955 he moved his growing family back to Newport Beach where he continued as a General Practitioner for the next decade.

Returning to school, this time at U.S.C., he studied anesthesiology, which served as his specialty for the remainder of his medical career. In addition, he engaged in volunteer work at S.O.S. (Share Our Selves) and Shalimar Learning Center. He was an active member and elder at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. Dr. Herman was a golfer, skier, and fisherman who enjoyed traveling with his wife and close friends.
