Breakers finish season with loss

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Newport Beach Breakers ended their season with a 23-16 loss to the Kansas City Explorers Wednesday at the Barney Allis Plaza.

The Breakers (5-9) only won in mixed doubles, where Newport Beach native Kaes Van’t Hof and Michaela Pastikova defeated Dusan Vemic and Rennae Stubbs, 5-3.

Van’t Hof and Ramon Delgado lost in men’s doubles to Vemic and James Auckland, 5-1, which ended the Breakers’ duo eight-match winning streak.

The Explorers finished the regular season with the best record in World Team Tennis at 13-1 and won the Western Conference. The Breakers finished fourth out of the five teams in the Western Conference and were knocked out of playoff contention with their 17-15 overtime loss to the New York Sportimes Tuesday. The Sportimes shared the Eastern Conference title with New York Buzz.

The playoffs begin today in Roseville, with the title match scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m.
