WET ‘N’ WILD WITH ROCKIN’ FIG:
Straight from the announcers’ booth, the Figster reporting in from the $200,000, six-star, Honda U.S. Open of Surfing presented by O’Neill at the pier.
The action has been going big time thanks to some hurricane swell from Elida, which sent overhead surf for the start. The nation’s finest and some of the world’s best have been surfing it up on the south side, going through some big-time eliminations.
When the dust cleared, making it to the Supergirl junior final was Ventura’s Sage Erickson, who won her semifinal with some great lip bashes, followed by Hawaiian ripper Coco Ho. In the other semi, Orange County’s Courtney Conlogue dominated for the win, with South Africa’s Nikita Robb advancing as well. The final will be 1:20 p.m. Saturday.
In the super competitive boys’ juniors final, Aussie Julian Wilson blew up for the win in his semi, followed by Santa Cruz’s Nat Young, who was throwing some straight up moves to advance too.
In the other semi, San Clemente surfer Tanner Gudauskas will make his first final appearance, as some hard-driving turns gave him the win, with Australian hottie Chris Salisbury advancing as well. The juniors will surf it up again at 2 p.m. Sunday for the final showdown.
In the long boards, a Hawaiian transplant to Oceanside, Noah Shimabukuro, could do no wrong, busting some nice moves and turns for the win, followed by fellow islander Ned Snow in the first semi-final. While North Carolina’s Tony Silvagni won on his last wave to edge former winner Taylor Jensen of San Clemente to round out the long board final coming up at 2:30 p.m. Sunday.
A ton more trials, heats and rounds for the mens’ division, which will feature No. 14 in the world, Surf City’s Timmy Reyes, world tour shredders Taylor Knox, Mick Campbell, Chris Ward and the freak of nature Jordie Smith.
In the women’s, world champ Stephanie Gilmore will be back to defend her title, along with Peru’s Sofia Mulanovich, another former world champ. Come on down — it’s been happening all week, and we’re just going to go even bigger this weekend.
The search is next, somewhere in Indo on July 30 to Aug. 10. Big Red Productions went off at the Fig Roast at Luggatti’s as a huge crowd showed up at rock and roll, roaster toaster. P.T. held the All Star roasting line-up in check through the night, of good laughs and good times shared by tons of old friends, family and surf fans alike.
Also the new surf flick “Busting Down the Door” premiered at the Bella Terra Wednesday and drew a star-studded field, including surf stars, P.T., Rabbit and Shaun Tomson, who started the whole pro surf scene rolling back in the ’70s. Definitely worth seeing.
Fig over and out.
