A Super event

She’s able to rip with the best of them. She can glide through the streets with ease and power through the powder effortlessly. It’s “Supergirl,” and she’ll be making appearances beginning Friday through Sunday just south of the Huntington Beach Pier.

Catch her while you can.

S3 Supergirl Jam is a three-day event featuring surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding competitions that run in conjunction with Go211 Live featuring the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing presented by O’Neill, taking place today through Sunday at the pier.

“It’s just a great event to be part of,” said 15-year-old Courtney Conlogue of Santa Ana, who will compete in both the Women’s Pro and Supergirl Junior Pro. “I’m excited about the U.S. Open. It’s a huge contest for all of us.”

More than 100 of the world’s top female action sports athletes are confirmed for S3 Supergirl Jam, which is celebrating its second year. Among that number is 23 Southern California athletes ranging in age from 9 (Alize Montes, a skateboarder from Seal Beach) to 39 (Cara-Beth Burnside, a skateboarder from Encinitas).

Huntington Beach will be represented at the S3 Supergirl Jam by 19-year-old Lauren Perkins and 18-year-old Jenna Balester in the skateboarding and surfing events, respectively.

The S3 Supergirl Junior Pro surfing contest marks the first time a women’s Junior Pro contest has been held since 2006, when Nikita Robb of South Africa won the title.

At last year’s U.S. Open, Conlogue ripped her way to a third-place finish in the Women’s Pro.

With an impressive résumé to her credit, the Sage Hill High School junior knows that the world’s best stand in her way of winning her first U.S. Open title.

“This event is important to young female competitors as they try to further their personal achievement and strive for their place among the ranks of the ASP,” said Kassia Meador, 26, of Oceanside, a professional surfer and S3 Supergirl Jam host committee member.

Conlogue, who recently won the National Scholastic Surfing Assn. national amateur title, has a wild-card that advanced her into Wednesday’s Round of 48 in the Women’s Pro.

She is on Surfer Magazine’s “Hot 100 to Watch in 2008” list.

“It takes a lot of energy to compete in both the Women’s Pro and Junior Pro, but I’m going to give it everything I’ve got,” Conlogue said.

“I think it’s going to be very a very competitive field once again. Every girl out there wants to win a U.S. Open title. I compete a little bit against some of the junior girls, but I only take on the pros when we meet in a WQS event, or as a wild card on the WCT. It’s going to be fun.”

One thing Conlogue hopes will work to her advantage is her regularly surfing the familiar — albeit fickle — waters around the pier.

“Huntington can be very tricky,” she said. “You need to understand it in order to be successful. The surf is always going in different directions and can be unpredictable. Being able to surf in it quite a bit hopefully will be beneficial to me.”
