Sawdust Visitors’ Choice honorees

The 2008 Summer Committee at the Sawdust Art Festival hosted the first ever Visitors’ Choice Awards on July 10. This year, Sawdust members had the chance to hear from visitors and learn what guests enjoyed most about the unique summer show. Since its June 27 opening, the Festival collected Visitors’ Choice ballots every day. After two weeks of casting votes, guests’ submissions were tallied up and the winners were officially announced:

 Best Booth Design, Interior – Missy Belland, Booth 234

 Best Booth Design, Exterior – Suzanne Esko & Ora Sterling, Booth 319

 Favorite Artist – four-way tie: Bruce Freund, Booth 331; Patti Klingenmeier, Booth 124; Doug Miller, Booth 310; and Julie Setterholm, Booth 417

 Favorite Festival Feature – Grounds (choices were Classes, Demonstrations, Entertainment and Grounds)

Hot sounds on Aug. 6

The Latin Jazz Syndicate featuring Bijon Watson returns to the Hotel Laguna Rose Garden from 6 to 8 p.m. Aug. 6 with an all-star group of musicians that has performed, recorded or toured with artists such as Poncho Sanchez, Jose Rizo’s Jazz On The Latin Side All-Stars, Luis Miguel and Dave Valentin, among others.

The group infuses authentic Latin grooves with classic standards, as well as performing original arrangements, and unique original tunes. The group is made up of Bijon Watson, trumpet, fluegelhorn; Carlos Ordiano, keyboards; Ruben Ordiano, drums; Oscar Cartaya, bass; and Angel Rodriguez, percussion.

Jazz Wednesdays are in the outdoor Rose Garden of the Hotel Laguna, 425 S. Coast Hwy.

Yoga Works at Whitney gallery

Whitney Gallery will host a yoga demonstration, “Art of Body & Mind — Living Art” featuring Cathy Cox of YogaWorks, 7 to 8 p.m. Aug. 7, during First Thursday’s Art Walk.

Whitney Gallery is located at 350 N. Coast Hwy. The gallery is open daily 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and by appointment.
