HB trio advances at U.S. Open of Surfing

HUNTINGTON BEACH - Huntington Beach athletes Timmy Reyes, Brett Simpson and Chris Waring all ripped their way into the Round of 48 in the men’s pro division Thursday by winning their respective heats at the Honda U.S. Open of Surfing at the Huntington Beach Pier.

The Round of 48 gets underway today, following the conclusion of the Round of 96 (heats 21-24).

Reyes, currently ranked No. 14 on the Assn. of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, overcame a slow start but went on to post scores of 9.17 and 8.60 (out of a scale of 10.00) to win his heat with a combined best two-waves score of 17.77. The 26-year-old emerged victorious out of a heat that included Dusty Payne of Hawaii, Austin Ware of the USA and Jean De Silva of Brazil.

Simpson, 23, is ranked 15th on the World Qualifying Series. He scored a 14.10 total to get past Eneko Acero of Spain (13.97) for the win. Australians Phillip McDonald and Leigh Sedley finished third and fourth, respectively.

Waring, the runner-up in last year’s Junior Pro final, scored a 14.93 total to edge out Patrick Bevin of France (14.50). Alejo Muniz (Brazil) was third and Ola Eleogram (Hawaii) fourth.

Other men’s pro heat winners Thursday: Taylor Knox (USA), Hodei Collazo (Spain), Tim Boal (France), Damien Fahrenfort (South Africa), Adam Robertson (Australia), Dane Gudasudkas (USA), Patrick Gudauskas (USA), Chris Davidson (Australia), Cory Lopez (USA), Greg Emslie (South Africa), Kirk Flintoff (Australia), Kekoa Bacalso (Hawaii), Torrey Meister (Hawaii), Joel Centeio (Hawaii), Roy Powers (Hawaii), Shaun Cansdell (Australia) and Hugo Savalli (Reunon).

The men’s pro Round of 96 continues at 7:30 a.m. today with heats 21-24. The Round of 48, heats 1-12, begin at approximately 9:10 a.m.

The women’s pro Round of 12, heats 1-4, is scheduled to begin at 2:10 p.m. Friday.
