Three locals in AVP semifinals

SAN DIEGO — Newport Harbor High product April Ross, who along with partner Jen Boss form the top-seeded women’s team at the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals Crocs Slam at San Diego, advanced to today’s semifinals with a pair of wins Saturday.

Former Estancia High standout Matt Fuerbringer and his partner, Casey Jennings, will square off against Costa Mesa resident Russ Marchewka and partner Mike Placek in today’s men’s semifinals.

Ross and Boss, assuming the top spot with perennial AVP kingpins Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh, as well as Nicole Branaugh and Elaine Youngs in China for the Olympic Games, defeated sisters Katie and Tracy Lindquist, 21-11, 21-10, in a 34-minute quarterfinal. Earlier, Boss-Ross topped Keao Burdine and Jennifer Snyder, 21-16, 21-17.

Fuerbringer and Jennings, the No. 6-seeded unit, knocked off Matt Olson and Kevin Wong, 21-14, 21-15, in a 40-minute quarterfinal. Fuerbringer and Jennings advanced to the quarterfinals with a forfeit victory over John Moran and Elay Zimit.

Marchewka and Placek, a Del Mar resident, are the No. 15 seed. They defeated No. 7-seeded Ryan Mariono and Ed Ratledge, 21-17, 11-21, 15-13, in a 67-minute quarterfinal duel. Marchewka and Placek earlier earned a 21-16, 21-14 triumph over Joaquin Acosta and Jonathan Acosta of Puerto Rico.

Jason Ring of Newport Beach and partner Hans Stolfus of Costa Mesa were eliminated in the quarterfinals, 25-27, 21-16, 15-10, by Nick Lucena and Sean Scott. Ring and Stolfus split $5,300.

Newport Beach resident Ty Tramblie, a Newport Harbor product playing with Mike Morrison of Encinitas, lost in the round of 16 and split $2,100 for finishing tied for ninth.

Ty Loomis, a Newport Beach resident playing with Brent Doble of San Juan Capistrano, also tied for ninth.

Former UCI player Whitney Pavlik finished tied for ninth in the women’s event, splitting $2,100 with partner Stacy Rouwenhorst.
