With back-to-school shopping quickly arriving, we thought we should find out about the kid essentials for the new season. This week, we are checking in with Kimberly Rief, owner of the children’s boutique the Flying Pram at 1576 Newport Blvd. in Costa Mesa.

What are some must-have items for back to school?

Tea Collection clothing is definitely a must-have for back to school. It is a causal, well-made line inspired by global fashion. Moms love it because it washes so well, and many pieces can be mixed and matched.

Where did the store get its name?

The store’s theme is the best items for children from around the world. I envisioned a baby pram flying all over the globe bringing back the best from each country.

Also, pram was a household word for me growing up. I was born in Germany, so my mother had a classic navy pram that she used for me. She saved it, and I have used it for my children.

What fashion trends are the kids begging to follow?

My store specializes in classic clothing, toys and gear. We are seeing a resurgence of clothing that lets kids look like kids instead of mini adults. Our clothing is modern and well-made with a classic sensibility. Children want to be comfortable and wear clothing that makes them smile.

What is your feeling on the “no white after Labor Day” rule?

In casual and warm Southern California, our need for cool clothing doesn’t end at Labor Day. By winter, there should be a switch to “winter white” in richer fabrics and thicker knits.

Any cool new shoes out?

Pazitos ballet flats are very popular. They are very well made and come in quilted, faux croc and patent leathers. They are sure to add fun to any outfit.

Any recommendations on educational games for kids?
