SPIRITUAL GUIDANCE:

People often see their spiritual lives separate from their secular experience. But they are not.

Whatever goes on in your personal life is a direct reflection of your deepest and most sacred thoughts. That’s why, during August and September, I explore the spiritual importance of the “Messengers of the Soul,” the popular musical icons who deliver the message and meaning of what matters most to their listeners.

I started this series last Sunday by looking at the lives and music of Sheryl Crow and Melissa Etheridge. Both artists are cancer survivors, environmentalists and dedicated practitioners of peace. Etheridge’s new CD features “What Happens Tomorrow,” an amazing song that asks listeners to consider the long-term effects of their behavior — which mirrors Gandhi’s concept about being the change you want to see.

As part of the service, the congregation sang Crow’s song, “Peace be Upon Us” — an anthem we will sing in the beginning of our Sunday services for eight weeks.

This Sunday I will examine the life of Elvis Presley and how his presence changed the behavior and motivation of millions of his fans. Elvis, a dedicated Christian, was acutely aware of the conflicts that arose from people’s misperception of his image versus his true personality. Such conflicts are common to all and must be resolved to avoid falling into the despair that haunted Elvis’ soul.

Other artists featured in this series include ABBA, Aretha Franklin and Bruce Springsteen.

What’s fun about this series is the opportunity to hear some of the best performers in Southern California. Backed up by our six-piece Center Band, the singers scheduled to perform will inspire you to open your heart and live a spiritual life.

Come listen and reflect; your heart knows what matters most and awaits your awakening to the messenger of your Soul.
