Street project moves along

Life will be a little smoother on Eastbluff Drive later this week as crews are putting the finishing touches on the biggest bulk of the project’s construction that starts and ends at Jamboree Road.

“We want our citizens to feel secure and [have] happy living in Newport Beach,” Councilwoman Leslie Daigle said. “The consistent upkeep of our roadways is part of the city’s strategic plans.”

The project was slated to give the road a pavement overlay and grinding on its edges, add new asphalt and clean up potholes and trouble spots at a cost of $1.1 million.

Those changes are expected to reduce noise and lessen wear and tear, public works officials said.

The road repaving is expected to be completed no later than today — right on par with the city’s schedule, city officials said. The completion of the paving will put an end to the worst of the project’s traffic impact.

Construction should be finished by the end of the month. Utility adjustments, traffic signal loops and street striping still need to be completed.

The work corresponds with a number of improvement projects within a square mile of the road. Corona del Mar High School just refurbished the Marian Bergeson Aquatics Center, the Irvine-Company is remodeling the neighborhood retail center and the Eastbluff Homeowners Assn. upgraded signage and landscaping in the area.

“We are all in this together,” Daigle said.

The project was funded through Measure M, special bonding and the city’s general fund. The street was repaired end to end, as well as from Vista del Sol from Eastbluff Drive to Vista del Oro. Vista del Oro from Vista Flora to Vista Trucha was also repaired.

It was important for crews to finish the project in August because they don’t want to interfere with traffic that will start once Corona del Mar High School students go back to school in September.
