A man shot in an alleyway behind a Huntington Beach apartment complex has been identified as Peter James Delano, 31, authorities said.

Police did not release Delano’s city of residence, police Lt. Mitchell O’Brien said.

Delano was found with gunshot wounds Sunday in the 2200 block of Hess Lane, according to Huntington Beach police. He died at the scene, authorities said.

Several callers told authorities they heard shots fired about 7:35 p.m. Sunday, authorities said. When police arrived, they found a man with several gunshot wounds lying in the alley behind an apartment complex that faces Delaware Street.

Residents at the apartment complex said they did not believe he lived there.

But the site of Delano’s death held a small memorial, even before he had been identified: a makeshift cross, a few candles and some roses. Aside from those, only some chalk outlines marked the scene several feet away.

Police said there was no information about suspects so far, but the investigation continues.
