Saying goodbye to our newspaper man

Bob Krone, 43-year member of the Rotary Club of Newport-Balboa, died Sunday night after a lengthy illness. Bob served as Rotary Club president in 1972-73, club treasurer and other board positions over the years. He was named Rotarian of the Year in 1974-75 and received the Bob Callis Award in 1971-72 and again in 1986-87.

One of the great Bob Krone stories deals with a call he had when he was a leader in the Orange County Republican Party from then-Gov. Ronald Reagan, asking whom Reagan should name to replace recently reelected County Supervisor Ron Caspers, who was lost at sea while celebrating his reelection to the Board of Supervisors.

The next day, Krone was on a Rotary Club-chartered bus to the Del Mar Races and saw past club President Thomas Riley and his wife. Bob asked Riley if he would like to be a county supervisor. Tom responded he wasn’t doing anything else at the time and yes, he would. The appointment to the position by Reagan came a couple of weeks later. That interaction launched Tom Riley’s successful 20-plus year career as a county supervisor!

Bob and his wife, Thelma, have been good friends to our family. To our daughters Jodi and Stacy, Krone was known as the newspaper man for he would save his stack of Los Angeles Times and Orange County Registers for the Ensign Elementary School paper drive. At paper drive time, we would visit Bob and load a 6-foot-tall stack of papers for recycling. Jodi recalls that her class would usually win the paper drive contest, thanks to Krone’s donation.

Our condolences to Thelma and the Krone family.
