I have to point out to Dave Sullivan (“Attack on GOP lacks some logic,” Aug. 21) that the $4 a gallon gas is not a crisis for the oil companies based in California. A little background and facts: California crude supplies 39% of California’s needs. Alaska supplies another 16%. That’s 55% of what we use direct from America’s highest-producing regions, and we get the highest priced gas in the nation while only collecting a mere 62 cents in taxes.

Unless Sullivan is suggesting a government-run oil industry like Mexico ($2.63 a gal) or China ($3.15 a gal), actually inflating your tires is the only thing that is going to save us money.

Consider Rohrabacher’s voting record

In response to letter from a senior citizen (“Rohrabacher’s office proves to be helpful,” Aug. 21), I am pleased that a Rohrabacher staffer (not him) assisted her, but take a look at his voting record before you cast a yes ballot.

I am a Huntington Beach resident since 1972. Despite my numerous e-mails, he has voted not to stop oil speculation, he has voted against a technical correction bill to allow airline crews to have the same-FMLA (Family medical leave) benefits that most U.S. employees are guaranteed (it passed Congress anyway).

He has been very pro-Iraq war and only started questioning it as election time nears. Space constraints prohibit anymore examples, but Rohrabacher is no longer pro-middle class.

He has become part of the Washington establishment that needs to be changed, and the reason I have changed to an Independent and will vote for Huntington Beach Mayor Debbie Cook.

One candidate supports drilling, one doesn’t

Whether you agreed or disagreed with the substance of Jim Delulio’s wry Sounding Off article (“Let’s Make H.B. ‘Drill City USA’,” Aug. 25),it did serve to point out the choice we have between two vastly different candidates for our 46th Congressional District seat.

I hope voters think long and hard about making it. By the way, only one candidate supports drilling in sensitive areas off our coast (if not on it) or maybe putting a Liquefied Natural Gas terminal or two in waters off our district.

I won’t be voting for him.
