Harbor’s LaMont steps down as girls’ swim coach

In the middle of last season, Newport Harbor High Coach Ken LaMont talked to Athletic Director Eric Tweit about how difficult it was juggling his time with the girls’ swimming team and an off-campus club team.

LaMont decided to drop Newport Harbor as Tweit said Lamont has stepped down after 10 years with the Sailors. LaMont will devote his time to the Irvine Novaquatics, a program in which he serves as the associate head coach.

“The [club] coaching just became more commanding of his time and it effected his ability to come to Newport and help us out,” Tweit said. “He did a great for us. We hate to lose him. You can’t blame him.

“He wasn’t a teacher on campus and coaching club was the job in which he made a living.”

During his time with the Sailors, LaMont led them twice to Sea View League titles and runner-up finishes at the CIF Southern Section Division I Championships. Last season, Newport Harbor placed fifth at the Sunset League finals.
