Laguna Beach police are trying to remove weapons from the hands of convicted felons and others in the city who should not have them.

On Wednesday, detectives, assisted by special agents from the California Department of Justice Bureau of Firearms, conducted a “gun sweep” operation throughout the city, Sgt. Darin Lenyi said.

Detectives researched people who possessed firearms illegally, including those who had been committed for psychological evaluation, convicted felons, persons convicted of certain misdemeanor crimes, and those with court orders prohibiting possession of a firearm.

Eleven residents who were identified as possibly possessing firearms unlawfully were contacted by law enforcement and one rifle, four handguns and 149 rounds of ammunition were seized, according to Lenyi.

No arrests were made, but detectives will submit the cases to the district attorney for review and consideration of charges.
