IRVINE — Senior Matt Murphy scored in the 51st minute to lead the Anteaters to the victory in the season opener for both teams Saturday night at Anteater Stadium.

Murphy connected off a pass from junior Irvine Garcia. Garcia had the ball in the middle of the box and passed it to the left side to Murphy who found the net for the gamewinning goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Pat Barton had two saves as he earned the shutout in the match. Keeper Tony Restino had eight saves for the Ospreys.

The Anteaters conclude the UC Irvine College Classic Monday at 2 p.m., when they face Cleveland State in the second match of a doubleheader.

SAN DIEGO — Larissa Nordyke had a career-high 12 kills to lead UC Irvine to a sweep of Albany that concluded play in the invitational Saturday.

The victory helped UCI (2-1) rebound from a 25, 16, 26-24, 21-25, 25-20 loss to San Diego earlier in the day. Sophomore Kari Pestolesi led the Anteaters with 14 kills and Lauren Kellerman added 11 kills.

Against Albany, junior setter Taryn Robertson had 33 assists, nine digs and four blocks to help UCI win, 25-19, 25-22, 25-21.

The Anteaters begin play in the Portland Tournament against Kansas State Thursday.

COSTA MESA — Vanguard improved to 4-0 as they wrapped up play in their event with two victories Saturday at the Pit.

The Lions opend the day with a sweep against Great Falls of Montana, 25-23, 25-22, 29-27. Heather DeJongh paced the Lions with 11 kills and setter Megan Walsh added 21 assists. Jamie Heenan, a Newport Harbor product, contributed for the Lions with three aces and seven kills. The Lions also swept Montana Tech, winning, 25-12, 25-14, 25-13.
