Alleged ‘doughboy’ captured
The man Newport Beach police believe robbed a Wells Fargo Bank in Newport Coast more than three months ago has been captured, police said Friday.
Jaime Torres, 47, of Santa Ana, was arrested about 9:45 a.m. in Tustin when police pulled over a rented PT Cruiser driven by another man and found Torres inside. The driver, 53-year-old Sergio Hernandez, was arrested on suspicion of accessory to robbery. Patricia Elizondo, 38, of Santa Ana, was arrested a short distance away in another car also on suspicion of being an accessory to robbery. Police say she is a friend of Torres.
On the afternoon of May 24, police say, Torres walked into the Wells Fargo Bank at 21103 Newport Coast Drive in Newport Beach armed with a gun and demanded the teller empty the drawer. Police would not disclose how much the suspect made off with. FBI officials say Torres, whom they’ve dubbed the “Doughboy Bandit” because of the baggy clothing they say he wore during robberies, is a suspect in a July 10 bank robbery in San Clemente.
Torres is being held in lieu of $1 million bail in Newport Beach’s city jail. Hernandez and Elizondo are also in custody there in lieu of $50,000 bail each.
